More and more cities and businesses are becoming more dog friendly and some like Boca Raton rank in the top 10 dog friendly cities nationwide. i can attest that my dog gets treated just as well at Mizner Park Restaurants as i am (if not better at the Dubliner!).
Traveling with dogs can be hard. It takes research, time online, asking friends and family for their experiences, and then simply driving into the unknown. What makes a town dog-friendly is a combination of factors.
Where can you stay? If it’s a motel or hotel, don’t just trust the online reservation process but call and confirm. There might be hidden fees. Some motels such as Motel 6 are known for being very accommodating but they often have only a limited number of rooms set aside for pets. Often those rooms are also set aside for smokers so be aware of that if you have health issues. Airbnb.com is another resource. Craigslist has vacation rentals. Simply add that you travel with dogs to any request for information. Campgrounds, both private and public are usually dog-friendly. In short, are you able to stay the night or week in town comfortably with your dog?
Walking your dog: are there parks, trails or lower traffic areas where you can safely walk your dog on leash? Better yet, if it’s truly dog-friendly, you’ll find a local animal shelter and dog park. Both are great places to meet other pet owners where you can ask for advice. Then take your dog with you to the parks. Hike in the hills. Play at the lake. Swim in the ocean. Bring your dog with you next time.
Dining out: the most dog-friendly towns have cafes and restaurants with patios and gardens where you can sit, sip, and relax with your dog lying quietly at your feet. Not all towns are set for this though. Local ordinances and laws that result from previous trouble with dogs in public places will put a big dampener on that! Read reviews by others. Thank the businesses that welcome you and your dog.
Is the town dog-friendly? Consider where you can stay, walk, and eat out with your dog. Traveling with dogs will only get easier as more towns are acknowledged for being dog-friendly.
