103 Puppies Rescued By Hero State Troopers
More than 100 puppies were rescued from an overturned truck after its speeding driver tumbled off a highway shoulder outside a small town in upstate New York on Tuesday, officials said.
Emily Woodrum, of Missouri, was shuttling 103 pooches to local malls when she lost control of her box truck and flipped into a ditch on the side of an eastbound interstate outside Avoca, cops said in a release.
State troopers, with help from a tow truck company, were able to pull every single dog from the upturned wreck, and all but five were unscathed. Two suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, and the rest were in stable condition at a local veterinary hospital on Thursday.
While it was not immediately clear where the dogs came from, the Finger Lakes SPCA said they were most likely from a “puppy mill” — a term describing a sketchy operation that breeds pets for sale under inhumane and unsanitary conditions.
The local SPCA noted that their representatives had detected a “strong likelihood” that the pups came from a mill, even though they showed no immediate signs of having been subjected to abuse or cruelty.
State troopers did not immediately respond to questions about the driver’s condition, and whether she will face charges.
