The Animal Protection League’s biggest fundraiser of the year, the third annual Hoosier Park Racing & Casino’s Pet-Tacular, is set for Oct. 9.
The theme this year is Pit Crew because we are highlighting pit bulls, a misunderstood breed. There will be many activities, but a highlight is The FURlong — A Walk in the Park. This walkathon goes from noon to 4 p.m. on the horse track at Hoosier Park. Participants will get pledges to walk, or simply make a donation in order to raise money for the care of homeless animals in our shelter. Registration is at 11 a.m.
The first year, I got the bright idea to walk all four hours and set my goal to raise $10,000. I was stunned that I reached it. Last year, I decided to be daring and increased my goal to $15,000. I was told I would never get it, but I had also been told I couldn’t raise $10,000 the year before. I’m a little stubborn and kept the goal at $15,000.
Thanks to all our supporters, we made it. Me walking forever seems to have become a tradition for this event so once again I will be walking all four hours, but this year I will walk 16 pit bulls from our shelter; one dog per lap. Once again my goal is $15,000. Please help me reach this goal. If you can’t walk, I’ll walk for you! Or better yet, come to the event and walk your own dog.
There will be many other activities while we walk, including costume and best trick contests for dogs, a silent auction with lots of nice things to bid on, great food, helicopter rides, lots of pet-related vendors and prizes.
We want to fill up that track at noon with dogs particularly loving, sweet pit bulls. So If you or your friends have a pit bull as a life companion please consider coming to show the world what great dogs they are. As with any dog at an event they must be dog friendly, no aggression, and they must be spayed/neutered. If you want to help with my walk go to www.inapl.org to donate online. Just put in the memo that it is for MALEAH’S LONG, LONG WALK.
Thank you for helping us make a difference for animals in our community. We are their voice. Please join us. Come spend the day with like-minded animal lovers and meet some great dogs.
We want to thank Hoosier Park ahead of time for being an extraordinary community partner. Because of its generosity, APL is able to give so many animals second chances at a great life.
And a big thank you to Royal Flush Plumbing. It had the first donation this year for my long, long walk. Let the donating begin!
