Why is My Dog Eating Grass?

Dogs that eat grass is more common than you think and stems from their ancestors in the wild. Eating grass is a weird behavior to us because we have the perception of dogs being carnivores or mainly meat-eaters. Though, in the wild, even wolves and coyotes will graze on grass, wheat, and grains. If your dog is consuming a large amount of grass and vomiting directly after, their stomach may be upset. If your dog consistently munches on blades of grass with no irritation, they may just like the way it tastes.

Dogs were known in the wild to eat grass, simply for their preference; historically, dogs in the wild ate anything they could to maintain their health, and snacking on grains and grass was their way of staying full when there was no prey. Dogs that regularly eat grass most likely appreciate the delicacy and are just fine.

There is no real way to no if your dog’s pica disorder is something to worry about unless this behavior is abnormal for them and they are vomiting every time after. If your dog hasn’t eaten grass and suddenly it becomes routine, there may be a nutrient deficiency. If you changed dog food’s this would be a trigger to abnormally eating grass, as well and fiber is the most common nutrient deficiency associated with this behavior.

If your dog doesn’t show any unusual symptoms after grazing on grass, you shouldn’t have much to worry about from them. Again, if this behavior is new and your dog shows other persistent symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, whining there may be underlying issues going on with their stomach. Always consult a professional if your dog’s health is threatened and monitor your dog while in the backyard to keep track of their potty breaks for reference.
