What Dogs are Classified as Pit Bulls?

Pit bulls can be classified into different breeds such as the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bully, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

The most common is the American Pit Bull Terrier, noticeably because of its head and body size, with stature low to the ground. This breed is an excellent companion and loyal dog; they require consistent training and socialization with other animals and people. With low maintenance grooming because they are short-haired dogs, brushing weekly keeps shedding to a minimum. This breed is seen in brindle, spotted, and solid color patterns.

The Staffordshire Terrier has a slightly smaller head than the American Pit, they are stubborn by nature and require a dominant owner who can maintain rules and regulations. They have similar grooming requirements as the other pit breeds and require daily exercise to exhaust the amount of energy they have.

The American Bulldog is great in dealing with pigs and was used historically for ranchers and farm needs. This breed is sturdy and muscular, with a square shaped head and usually a short snout. This dog does not require extraneous exercise, but a daily walk should do more than enough for their physical health. Low maintenance on grooming, this dog has short, silky hair and needs brushing about once a week.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is different from the Staffordshire Terrier, being more stout and muscular; these dogs were used for fighting and battling because of their incredible strength and agility. They are very difficult to train and need firm discipline to be obedient and well-mannered.

All of these classifications of the pit bull breed are unique in their own way and have very similar characteristics in personality and build. Many other breeds like the Cane Corso, Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, and Bullmastiff are mistaken to be pit bulls. The “bully” breed overall are loyal and loving companions who live to please their owners.
