Human Drugs That Can be Used on Dogs
You can’t sleep when your dog is sick. Since you have a soft spot for your dog in your heart, you might be tempted to give it drugs that are usually prescribed for human use without knowing that you are worsening the condition. Although both humans and dogs suffer from the same diseases, some drugs can react badly when administered to a canine.
Even a lay man can tell that humans are much bigger in size than dogs. This means that what may be the correct dose in humans can turn out to be poisonous if given to a dog. According to Dr. Cathy Meeks, a board-certified internal medicine specialist and a Group Medical Director at BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Tampa, Florida it’s advisable to seek advice from your vet before giving your dog any medicine meant for humans. Below is a list of medicine that can be used on both dogs and humans.
- MiraLAX: MiraLAX can be given to dogs to help them recover from constipation. The drug should be administered in small amounts. This is because an overdose can result in diarrhea which in return causes the canine to loose a lot of water. To be on the safe side, it’s recommended that you seek assistance regarding the correct dose from your vet.
- Pepcid: Pepcid is used to neutralize acidity in the stomach and prevent ulcers by shielding the stomach lining. The drug is actually safe for both humans and dogs. However, the medicine is not ideal for a dog that’s vomiting because it could be suffering from another disease. Caution should be observed when administering this drug because an overdose can cause vomiting, increased heart rate, red mouth and ears, pale gums, restlessness and low blood pressure.
- Prilosec: This medicine is also used to fight against acidity in the stomach. If the drug is not administered in the correct dosage, it might cause lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, and changes in urination or behavior.
- Lomotil: Lomotil is used for treating diarrhoea in dogs and humans. The dogs can also be administered to dogs that are suffering from mild cough. The drug works by clearing air passages.
