My Wonderful Pitbull Experience
My Pitbull experience has been a great one, my dog Lucho is a very loyal, friendly, mild-mannered pup. He has never been aggressive or violent in any way and thinks he is a lap dog. My partner and I got him when he was just 6 weeks old, he was potty-trained within a couple weeks, and we kennel-trained him throughout the first year to eventually leave him alone in the house.
Little did I know, my fiancé and I were expecting a baby in 7 months, so not only were we raising a puppy, we were expecting a newborn within the year. As Lucho got bigger, so did my belly; he became more mindful to me and disciplined throughout my pregnancy. Since Lucho was still learning how to behave and what the chain-of-command meant, it almost seemed as if he knew there was something going on.
As we prepared the baby’s room, we let Lucho in, but only when invited. We talked to him to let him know that he would be having a little brother; the weeks leading up to my baby’s arrival, we gave Lu plenty of time outdoors and showed him more than the “usual” attention. Once the baby arrived, my fiancé brought home his cap and blanket so that he could familiarize himself with the smell and prepare for his brother’s homecoming.
It took a lot of trial and error trying to get our 100-lb. dog to get on the bed gently or walk past the baby without stepping on him or hitting him with his tail, but it was done. Lucho is excellent with all people and all kids, not just his brother. He has proven to our family that he loves us, as we do him; Lucho and his brother get to grow up together and it can’t get any better than having your own live-in “pony” at the age of 1!
