Puppy Recovering After Being Abandoned At Shelter With Broken Legs

An 11-week-old old Yorkie puppy is recovering from surgery after being found abandoned with two broken legs at the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society on the North Side.

Pins were inserted into the dog, now named Laney, to help her legs heal. Officials said the type of break she suffered is typical of a jump or a fall.

Dr. Anthony Pardo, who performed the surgery, said Laney will wear splints for four to five weeks.

“During that time, she’s going to be crate-confined, have bandage changes, and hopefully she will be adoptable after that,” Pardo said Thursday.

Anyone who wants to adopt Laney should contact the Humane Society at www.wpahumane.org or 412-321-4625.

Laney was coming out of sedation when she was found Tuesday, according to the shelter. Officials believe the type of medication found in the dog’s system likely came from an animal hospital.

Dan Rossi, CEO of the Humane Society, said it’s possible that the dog’s owner took Laney to an animal hospital for treatment, where she was sedated, but then didn’t go through with treatment and decided to leave the puppy.

Rossi is asking any animal hospital that came in contact with the dog to provide the Humane Society with information.

Pittsburgh police are investigating to find out how the dog was injured and who left her behind.
