However, the family have not come to pick her up – they’ve come to get another dog, leaving their old pet behind, having apparently grown tired of her.
“Talking to her owners they told me they were not here to reclaim her, they were getting another dog,” Lara said.
“Zuzu’s father … had just passed away and Zuzu was crying and heartbroken. She escaped her family’s yard and hopped the wall and got into her neighbour’s yard.
“The unhappy neighbour called animal control and she ended up here. And her owners were going to let her stay here.
“Their reason was because she was crying and sad since her father passed away. She wasn’t a happy dog anymore.
“Their solutions for her unhappiness was just leaving her here – and go get another dog.”
The video has been shared more than 3,500 times in the last two days, attracted a large number of angry comments from viewers appalled by the family’s behaviour.
“How someone could ever do this is beyond me,” wrote Brianne Cole. “This family should not be able to adopt again.”
“You comfort your dog,” added Jan Alverson Koza. “Maybe get her another playmate. You sure as hell don’t leave her at the pound … This girl needs a loving foster or loving new home as quickly as possible.”
The story has a happy ending: according to an update from the Downey Animal Care Center, Zuzu is to be rehomed with another family this Friday.
UPDATE: the family did NOT adopt another dog. Zuzu will be picked up this Friday by the PAF rescue in Canoga Park. (Pet Adoption Fund)
